What is Diquat and where was it used in Europe in the past?

Diquat is a non-selective contact herbicide active ingredient that has been widely used in Europe for the desiccation of potatoes, cereals and, for example, oilseed rape. Diquat was no longer approved in the European Union (EU) in 2019 due to concerns about its adverse effects on humans, particularly as a bystander in the field, and also on aquatic life.

This removed the most effective and rapid chemical desiccant for potatoes from the market. No equivalent chemical substitute exists. This presented growers with major challenges in rebalancing desiccation.
